You'll find a compass rose on nautical charts and old maps, where it has helped sailors get their bearings for centuries. Its points spread out like the petals of a flower, which is how it got the name rose. This laser cut compass rose design makes a sixteen point star inside a round frame, and you can build it as a wood quilt or as faux stained glass with colored acrylic. It isn't tied to any season, so it can hang on a wall or in a sunny window all year.
The quilted version sets pale cherry against walnut and mahogany, and that contrast makes the points of the star stand out without any paint. Each piece of the quilt is numbered to match the color planner, so you'll always know where it goes. Two of the smaller mahogany files nest onto the backer sheet, which means one board covers all three. In the faux stained glass version, the acrylic sits between the wood front and back, and you pick the colors. Hang the two side by side at a craft show or market and let shoppers choose between warm wood and bright acrylic. Either one also makes a good gift for a friend who loves the water, and it's worth cutting one for your own wall too.
Everything arrives as an instant digital download of laser cut files. No finished wall hanging or acrylic is included.

Material and thickness
- Quilted design: 1/4 inch (6mm) wood for most files, 1/8 inch (3mm) for Mahogany C and D, and 1/16 inch (1.5mm) walnut for the sheet that glues onto the backer.
- Designed for wood. 3 different wood grains create the contrast and texture. No paint needed. No wood? No problem. Paint the pieces or use acrylic instead.
- Faux stained glass design: 1/8 inch (3mm) wood for the front, middle and back, plus acrylic for the center in the colors or patterns you choose.
Sorted by wood species, rotated for grain
The files are sorted by wood species and the pieces are rotated to follow the grain, so your finished project has a clean, intentional look without you having to rearrange anything in your design software. We do this on every design that uses multiple wood species.
